We use YunExpress for a meaningful share of the parcels we ship, but we don't default to it for everything, and you shouldn't want a fulfilment partner who does. Every carrier has a shape it's good at. Here's when YunExpress tends to make sense, and when we'd pick something else instead.
Where YunExpress tends to be a strong fit
- Small and medium B2C parcels leaving China. This is its core business, and it's built for exactly this.
- Major ecommerce destinations, US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, where its network and last-mile partnerships are established.
- A middle ground between slow postal options and premium express couriers, when you need tracked delivery without paying express-courier prices.
- Products that fit cleanly into one of its dedicated lines, apparel, cosmetics, general parcels.
Where it's usually a weaker fit
- Guaranteed one or two day delivery. That's not the product it's built for.
- Very high-value, fragile, or irreplaceable goods that need premium custody and full insurance.
- Temperature-controlled products.
- Heavily regulated or prohibited goods.
- Very bulky, low-value products where the volumetric weight math kills your margin, see our post on how that calculation actually works.
- Destinations where we've seen the local last-mile partner underperform.
Why we don't pick one carrier and stick with it
Route performance isn't fixed. It changes with the destination, the season, customs rule changes, airline capacity, and which local carrier is handling last-mile in a given country right now. A route that was reliable in spring can get congested during peak season. A carrier that's fast to one country can be mediocre to the country next door. Locking into one carrier for everything means you inherit its weak spots along with its strong ones.
What we actually look at before choosing a route
- Landed cost at the parcel's real dimensions, not just the base rate.
- How the route's actually been performing recently, not just the published estimate.
- Whether the product needs special handling, documentation, or a dedicated line.
- The last-mile carrier's track record for that specific country.
- Customs predictability for that route right now.
- Claims and compensation terms if something does go wrong.
What this means for you
You shouldn't have to know or care whether your order ships via YunExpress, another line, or a mix depending on the product. That's our job. We're carrier-flexible on purpose: we compare the available options against your specific product, destination, size, and delivery target, and we quote the one that actually makes sense, not whichever carrier we happen to have a preference for.
If you're currently locked into a single carrier through another provider and it's underperforming on certain routes, that's a common reason people switch to us. send us a message on WhatsApp a product and destination and we'll tell you honestly what we'd actually route it through and why.
