YunExpress Pricing and Volumetric Weight, Explained

 ·  ⏱ 3 min read
Chargeable weight picks the larger number. The larger result drives the shipping charge.

There's no single public YunExpress rate card you can just look up, because pricing depends on origin, destination, postcode, product category, battery status, weight, and dimensions all at once. What we can explain clearly is the part that trips people up most: volumetric weight, and why your light, bulky product might cost more to ship than you expect.

Actual weight compared with volumetric weight.
Actual weight compared with volumetric weight.

The basic rule

Couriers charge you for whichever is higher: the actual weight of your parcel, or a calculated volumetric (dimensional) weight based on its size. The formula is: volumetric weight (kg) = Length x Width x Height (all in cm) divided by a divisor.

The divisor depends on the service. As of mid-2026, YunExpress Priority uses a divisor of 8,000, Standard service to Canada uses 6,000, and Standard to most other published markets also uses 8,000. Apparel Dedicated Line is billed on actual weight only, volumetric weight doesn't apply there. Economy and Cosmetics rules vary by market, so don't assume one number applies everywhere.

A worked example

Take a parcel measuring 40cm x 30cm x 20cm with an actual weight of 1.2kg. At divisor 8,000: volumetric weight = (40 x 30 x 20) / 8,000 = 3.0kg. At divisor 6,000: volumetric weight = (40 x 30 x 20) / 6,000 = 4.0kg.

Either way, that 1.2kg product is getting billed at 3-4kg. That's not a scam or a hidden fee, it's just how cross-border parcel pricing works when a box is bulky relative to how much it weighs.

What's actually in the quote

A proper YunExpress quote can include the weight-based transport charge, a per-parcel or registration fee, fuel or capacity surcharges, remote-area fees, oversize fees if applicable, customs or duty charges depending on the service, and optional insurance. If a quote you're getting doesn't break these out, ask for the breakdown before you commit a route to your pricing.

What we actually do about it

We don't just accept whatever box a supplier ships us. Packaging choice is one of the few levers you have real control over. We remove unnecessary factory packaging where it's safe to do so, cutting bulk without cutting protection. We use snug-fit packaging instead of oversized boxes with a lot of empty void space, since every extra centimeter compounds in that formula. For apparel, we use the actual-weight dedicated line where the product and account terms qualify, which skips the volumetric calculation entirely. We check dimensions before quoting, not after the first shipment goes out and surprises everyone.

What to ask for in your own quote

Chargeable weight and which divisor was used. Whether duties and taxes are included (DDP) or separate. Known surcharges. How long the quote is valid for. If a fulfilment partner can't answer these, they're probably not checking the actual numbers either, they're just passing along whatever the carrier portal spits out.

Dimensions matter as much as weight in this business. If you're pricing a new product and it's bulky for its weight, it's worth checking the packed dimensions and running the math before you commit to a shipping cost on your product page.

A quick margin test for bulky products

Run the same three checks for every new product before using a low product cost as the basis of your ad budget.

  • Get a real packed measurement for the largest common variant, not an unboxed sample measurement.
  • Compare actual and volumetric weight on the intended YunExpress service; plan from the larger figure.
  • Test whether a smaller, stronger or more efficient carton changes the billable bracket without compromising protection.
  • Price from the landed cost at the destination you expect to sell into most often.

Decision point: if packaging makes the product uneconomic on your core route, solve that before scaling traffic—not after refunds or margin surprises.
