The Day Someone Asked Us to Build an App

Clarify the scope, then solve the issue. A good answer separates what is needed now from what is merely possible.

First official day of our Dragon Boat Festival break, though you wouldn't necessarily know it from the group chats — a chunk of the team stayed on duty, because holidays are relative when you've got clients across a dozen time zones who don't know or particularly care that it's a Chinese public holiday.

A new conversation came in from someone wanting to sell a smart fitness wristband, customizable colors and logo, which is a completely normal ask — right up until he added, almost as an aside, that he'd also need a companion phone app built for it. That one made us smile. We're very good at sourcing, packing, and shipping; we are not, in fact, a software studio. We explained we could absolutely handle the hardware side and pointed him toward finding an app developer separately. It's a good reminder that from the outside, "fulfillment company" can start to look like "does literally everything," and every now and then someone tests exactly where that line is.

We also finally got on a proper call with the new footwear brand from a couple of days ago, and it was a good one — we walked through how we work day to day, gave them a sense of the scale we operate at, and talked through realistic timelines for getting to Germany. There's something satisfying about a client going from "still figuring out branding" to "understands exactly how the pipeline works" in the space of thirty minutes. Sample costs are still pending since most of the factories are on holiday, but the groundwork is solid.

Smaller, sillier moment of the day: a customer swore their new gadget's memory card wouldn't click into place. Turned out it just needed a firmer push — we get this exact message often enough that we've started keeping the "use your fingernail, it's supposed to click" explanation on standby. Never underestimate how much support volume comes down to a card that just needed one more millimeter of push.
