Thursday: Trust, a Scent Subscription Idea, and Losing One Gracefully

 ·  ⏱ 3 min read
Trust is built in the small decisions. A transparent answer can matter more than winning one order.

Had a new prospect today who point-blank refused to type anything useful into the chat. "I don't talk because I don't trust anyone I met five minutes ago online," they said, which, fair enough, is exactly the right instinct for anyone about to hand a stranger money and product ideas over WhatsApp. We told them that's completely normal, no pressure, take your time. Trust in this business is earned slowly and honestly, message by message — you can't rush it and you shouldn't try.

Another new one insisted on an actual phone call before sharing a single product link, wanted to essentially see behind the curtain — proof there's a real warehouse, real people, before committing to anything. Also came with a complication: banned from one of the usual payment platforms and hunting for an alternative. We got on a call, talked it through, connected the store. Sometimes the deciding factor isn't price or shipping speed, it's just someone taking fifteen minutes to be a real human on a video call.

On the existing-client side, the most fun conversation of the day was a scaling brand asking whether we could help design an actual scent insert for their dog beds — something replaceable every month or so, sold as a subscription add-on. Not something off a shelf, an actual custom product development request. That's the kind of ask that reminds you this stops being pure fulfillment somewhere along the way and starts being product partnership, which is honestly the fun part.

We also had a client, still deciding whether to work with us at all, point out — correctly — that we ask for the AliExpress link before quoting, which understandably makes people suspicious we're just trying to beat that price by a hair. We were straight with them: our number is close to cost because we're accounting for real shipping and handling, not because we're trying to squeeze extra margin out of a single order. It didn't convince him, and he walked, at least for now. Not every conversation ends in a signed client, and that's fine — better an honest no than a client who feels tricked six months in.

Also spent a chunk of the afternoon fielding nervous questions about a rumored new EU import fee starting next month. Truth is, at this point, we don't know exactly how it will shake out either — and said so, rather than pretending otherwise.
