YunExpress Tracking Handoffs: How to Read the Original and Local Numbers

 ·  ⏱ 3 min read
Follow the handoff, not only the first code. Both numbers describe the same parcel journey.

If you've ever watched a YunExpress shipment and seen the tracking number change, or the carrier name suddenly switch to something you don't recognize, you're not imagining things. That's a normal part of how cross-border parcels move, but it's also where most tracking confusion and complaints come from. Here's what's actually going on.

The tracking phases, in plain English

Shipment information received / label created. The booking exists in the system. The parcel might not have a physical scan yet, this is just the label being generated. Collected / processing in origin country. The parcel is physically in YunExpress's network in China. Departed origin / line-haul. It's moving internationally now. Scans can get sparse during this stage, which is normal, not a sign something's wrong. Customs processing / cleared. The import process at the destination is underway or done. Handed to last-mile carrier. This is the big one. The parcel moves into a domestic delivery network, and a second, local tracking number often gets assigned. Out for delivery / delivered. The local carrier controls this last leg and the proof of delivery.

Why the YT number isn't the whole story

A YunExpress tracking number typically starts with "YT." That number tells you about the international leg. But once the parcel gets handed to a local postal service or courier (think Royal Mail, USPS, La Poste, Deutsche Post, depending on the country), a second domestic number often takes over as the more detailed source of information. If you're only watching the original YT number after handoff, you might see it go quiet even though the parcel is actively moving through the local network under a different number.

Where things actually go wrong

The international flight part is usually fine. The weak point is almost always the boundary between YunExpress and the local carrier: the local number isn't always obvious or easy to find, the local carrier's name might not be communicated clearly, "delivered" can turn into a dispute, wrong address, left with a neighbor, dropped at a locker, no photo proof, and sometimes the parcel shows as handed over before the local carrier has actually scanned it in, creating a confusing gap.

What we actually do about it

We don't leave you or your customer stuck flipping between two tracking systems trying to figure out what's going on. For every shipment we handle, we try to surface the original YunExpress number, the local tracking number once it's assigned, the local carrier's name, and a plain-English status instead of raw carrier jargon. If tracking stalls past a reasonable threshold, we're the ones who chase it down, not you, and not your customer.

That's the actual point of using a fulfilment partner instead of managing a carrier account yourself. You deal with us. We deal with the carrier and the local delivery network when something needs chasing.

If a shipment's tracking looks stuck or confusing, send us a message on WhatsApp the order and we'll dig into where it actually is, not just what the last scan says.
