The Day a Tax Reform Ate All Our Chats

 ·  ⏱ 2 min read
Translate a rule change into an order decision. Clear operational guidance matters more than a headline when policy changes.

Some days the news isn't about one client, it's about all of them at once. Word came down yesterday from a logistics conference that European import tax rules are changing from July 1st, and today we spent hours copy-pasting the same explanation into probably twenty different conversations: starting in a couple of weeks, there'll be a small extra charge per distinct product code inside a parcel, not just per parcel. It's the kind of policy shift that sounds tiny in a press release and then becomes ten client questions an hour once people realize what it actually means for their margins. A few clients asked whether they should be worried; the honest answer was "a little, but not as much as your competitors who haven't heard yet." Silver linings.

We also had a good back-and-forth with a client selling ceramics who found the same-looking cup on AliExpress for a couple of dollars less and, fairly, asked why we couldn't match it. We walked through it properly: the reason our price is higher is the packaging — fragile items like ceramics need real protective packaging or they arrive in pieces, and we've kept damage rates on this category under half a percent because of it. He took the explanation in stride, paid the higher price, and moved on. It's a conversation worth having out loud rather than just eating the complaint quietly, because it's usually the difference between a client understanding your process and a client assuming you're padding your margin.

The bigger adrenaline of the day belonged to a client mid-launch with a well-known online personality, timed to go live imminently, expecting a serious spike in order volume within 48 hours of going live. Stock had been sitting reserved at the factory for days without confirmation, tempers on the factory side were fraying, and we spent the day trying to keep everyone calm and coordinated before the countdown hit zero. There's a particular kind of stress that comes from watching a launch clock tick down when the goods aren't fully locked in yet — equal parts thrilling and slightly nauseating.
