Owning Our Mistakes Out Loud

 ·  ⏱ 2 min read
Acknowledge, verify, correct. Owning an error early gives the customer a clearer path to resolution.

There's a version of this job where you just quietly fix things. There's a better version where you tell the client exactly what went wrong, even when it makes you look a little sloppy for a day. Today was the second kind, twice over.

First: the fabric mix-up from earlier this week finally got fully unwound. Turns out our own team had mislabeled two different fabric samples before sending them out — a stretch material got tagged with the name of a completely different, non-stretch fabric. The client had actually loved the fabric she received; she just needed to know its real name and weight so we could keep using it for production. It took way more back-and-forth than it should have to say "sorry, our merchandiser labeled these wrong," but once we did, the whole thing resolved itself in about ten minutes. Sometimes the fix is boring. The getting-there is the annoying part.

Second, an electronics dropshipper sent over a video walking through, feature by feature, why the action camera we'd sourced for him didn't match the app functionality he expected — missing exposure controls, a few settings just not there. He was right to push on it; it turned out to be an older hardware revision than what he'd been shown originally. Nobody enjoys getting called out with a screen-recording, but a client who takes the time to document a problem that clearly instead of just complaining is genuinely easier to work with, even when he's annoyed. We're back to the factory to track down the newer version.

New today: a dropshipper wanting small custom runs of country flags — as few as five units per country, on demand, for a niche product line targeting a handful of specific markets. Not a huge order by volume, but a nice example of how flexible small-batch production has gotten; a few years ago nobody would have bothered with an order that size.

And because it's summer in China, half of today's messages were suppliers politely telling us "not this week" because everyone worth talking to already left for the holiday.
